CHRISTMAS WEEK, 2008

Good Friends, Good Food

FIRST STOP, PUGSVILLE

Michelle and Tim are so happy to have found Amy and Ginger.  They had long wanted pugs and happily adopted the pair.  Tim and Bob meet every other week to work on business planning involving mushroom growing and tempeh making.  On Christmas week, Michelle and Camille made a bread baking date to coincide with Tim and Bob's meeting.  They met us at the door with their cute little pets all dressed up in their Christmas best.  After the bread came out of the oven, we all at an early dinner.

CHRISTMAS DAY

We decided to make a day of it with cooking, disc golf, dinner, music and games.  Jason and Haruka met us at the door with three trays of vegetables straight from their farm, Edible Earthscapes.

SEITAN - THE OTHER WHITE MEAT

Before heading through the woods and over to Augusta for a game of Disc Golf, Bob whipped up a batch of Seitan.  Jason and Haruka were interested in learning how to make this vegan equivalent of veal.  The stiff dough, made from wheat gluten, nutritional yeast and spices, is cut into cubes and boiled, then cooled, sliced, breaded and fried.  Sounds like a lot of work but so is getting your cow pregnant, birthing the calf, tethering him, feeding him and eventually slaughtering and butchering him.  Equally easy, of course, is driving to the grocery store and picking up a Styrofoam package of animal protein.

DINNER

Haruka showed Camille how to make these tasty Daikon steaks.  At Edible Earthscapes, the Daikon is their signature vegetable.  After a fine game of disc golf, we dined on these and many other delicious items, including those seitan cutlets, the potato latkes that Greg brought and fried up, bread that David baked and brought Challah, Haruka made a wonderful stew and Camille baked a pumpkin pie.

RELAXATION

Bob and Jason traded some music, Sky the cat came out to play and we played a game called "Apples and Apples" after dinner.

THE PERFECT END TO A PERFECT DAY

Before dispersing we set up the camera and took a group photo of Greg and his wonderful hair, Jason, David, Bob, Haruka and Camille.  Tami and Lyle had joined us for drinks and dinner but we were too busy enjoying ourselves to take any photos before they went home.
