Birds In Cages

By Mike Illo

Colorado, 2004

Birds... in cages.

From the time they hatch...

...in cages.

Learning how to speak, read and write...

...in cages.

Adding symbols, playing with toys,

quietly sleeping or making noise,

...in cages.

Driving cars and going to work,

or staying home,

watching T.V.

Listening to the radio.

Hearing what others have to say,

...in cages.

All grown up, wings useless.

Looking outside the cage.

Looking at what was once home.

Realizing that something is not right.

Not knowing what to do about it.
