October, 2009 - Page 4 of 4

THE GOURDS

Dem Boys from Austin TX made their first trip to Shakori, playing to a sparse, post rain crowd on Sunday - as usual, they were awesome.

FRONT MEN

Kevin Russell (left) and Jimmy Smith are always crowd pleasers, They closed the show with an encore comprised of the following cover tunes: Gin and Juice (Snoop Dogg) > The Good Ol' Boys (Waylon Jennings) > Up on Cripple Creek (The Band) > Pressure Drop (Toots & the Maytals) Click on their photos to see them up close.

DONNA THE BUFFALO

DTB is the founding band of this festival, and their heart-felt, jam band sounds help define the Shakori Experience.  Click on the photos for a better look.

KEITH SECOLA & HIS WILD BAND OF INDIANS

Their music is described as, "The thunderous sound of a Pow Wow Drum, power chords and finger pick'in, echoes of Native American Flute,." Pretty much warps up the raucous sound of this Native American band.

MOONTEE SINQUAH - HOOP DANCER EXTRAORDINAIRE

He has an amazing amount of energy, and can get it going with more hoops that you'd believe was humanly possible.

SAMBA MAPANGALA

Congolese vocalist and band leader Samba Mapangala has been a dominant figure in East African music since the mid-1970s.

DANCING AND SINGING - AFRICAN STYLE

Their music is an innovative mix of the best rumba and soukous from Congo, with the earthier Kenyan style.

THE DUHKS

From Winnipeg, Manitoba, the Duhks play a fusion of traditional bluegrass, folk rock, Afro-Cuban jazz and soul. They are fast becoming a Shakori favorite.

THE GRADY GIRLS & THE MIDTOWN DICKENS

The Grady Girls (left) are a quartet of fiddles, flute, and bodhran played by a pair of sisters and their two cousins, who play Irish inspired tunes although they are from Ithaca, NY.  The Midtown Dickens (right) is a Durham, NC based band fronted by two best friends that stated playing punk-folk using found and donated instruments.

SAMUEL JAMES

Sam James is a bluesman, who played a haunting rendition of Michael Jackson's hit "Billie Jean."
