MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS IN THE WASHINGTON DC AREA

May, 2009

CHEATERS

After Christine broke down on the highway and we rented another car, we drove over to Ned's to spend the night.  There didn't seem to be any point in fighting DC traffic to end up in Lancaster four or five hours later at ten or eleven pm.

Ned took us out for Thai food and we all needed reading glasses (or 'cheaters' as a former employer of ours called them) to see the menu.  Guess we aren't getting any younger.  Anyway, we had fun trying on each other's glasses, proving we are only as old as we feel.  Both Bob and Ned have on Camille's  red glasses and Camille is wearing Bob's drug store cheaters.

TUSCANY NIGHT IN CABIN JOHN

A week later, on our return trip, we again found ourselves on the receiving end of Ned's hospitality.  This time, we decided to "stay in" and throw together a meal for ourselves.  Darla and John had given us some beautiful wooden candlesticks before we left their home, so we  put them on the table with fragrant roses from Ned's yard and had a European-style meal.  Iris came outside with us and enjoyed lurking around the yard.

UN BUEN PROYECTO

Eight years ago, Ned helped us start a garden on Maui on his birthday.  This time it was our turn.  Ned and Bob mixed peat moss, compost and vermiculite and built a raised bed in a sunny spot close to the house for kitchen herbs.

MEMORIAL DAY HIKE

Ned took us for a nice, easy hike up Sugarloaf Mountain in Dickerson, Maryland Memorial Day morning.

FLORA AND FAUNA

Bob was on the lurk for fancy nature photos and captured some Mountain Laurel and a big-eyed click beetle.

NEAR NEARS

These ferns made our heads echo with color and pattern.  If it was a sound it would sound like helicopter blades, going 'near, near, near, near.'

GOOD FRIENDS ALWAYS MAKE US LAUGH

It is nice to know someone long enough that everything between us seems funny.  Even posing for a photo can be a big joke.  Click on the group photo to view a larger file.

PARTY AT JENNIFER AND ALEXANDER'S

In which Frankie gets involved with a baybee.  Our hosts were pregnant and many of their friends were new parents as well.

A NEW FRIEND

Robin hit it off with Camille and Bob.  She told Camille all about poison ivy and asked Bob all about composting.
