GROWING FOOD AT CAMELINA

March 2009

NORTHWARD EXPANSION

Bob continues to work compost into the soil and create infrastructure for the garden. These photos were taken two weeks apart, on March 4 and March 18.  On the right, he's added trellis for a pea patch.

TALK TO THE HAND

Bob harvested some red clay for Link and left his mark along the way.  Link wants to explore pottery making with local clay.

BEETS ME

We both love beets so Bob is making sure to plant them early.  We like them pickled, steamed or raw in salads.

POTATO PATCH

An old bed sheet, some cardboard, compost, spuds and hay are all it takes.

VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE

And we have it in spades!  Not every gardener can say they have Miner's Lettuce and Hops in their garden.

TENDER TENDRILS

Camille is looking forward to sweet peas on her birthday in June.

STRANGE BED FELLOWS

We didn't expect to see these little mushrooms spring up in the raised beds.

HAPPY GREENS

The lettuce and spinach have been enjoying the longer days and cool weather.

SHITAKES A-POPPIN

This log was inoculated last March and is now bearing fruit.

Enormous, tasty fruit!

MYCELIUM INCUBATOR

This is a climate-controlled cabinet for encouraging growth of mushroom mycelium.   The jars of sterilized rye berries were inoculated with oyster, shitake and lion's mane mycelium.

PROUD MOTHER

Camille is very proud of Bob's efforts at growing oyster mycelium.

SEED STARTING CENTER

Yet another project designed to help us grow our own food.  Bob got out his tools and installed shelving and grow lights in the back bedroom.

The tomato and onion seedlings seem happier already!

TROPICAL TOMATOES

We thought these seedlings looked a bit like tiny palm trees.
